Behind the Scenes of The Shadow Journalist

What does it take to bring a historical fiction novel to life? Writing The Shadow Journalist has been an incredible journey filled with research, discovery, and a deep connection to the past. In this behind-the-scenes look, we’ll explore the inspiration, the challenges, and the process that went into crafting the story of Nate Briggs.

Unearthing a Family Legacy

The inspiration for The Shadow Journalist came from my family’s personal history, particularly the love letters exchanged between my grandfather, Nate Briggs, and my grandmother, Molly. These letters, filled with raw emotion and unwavering devotion, provided the foundation for Nate and Molly’s relationship in the book.

Researching my grandfather’s life led me down countless rabbit holes—from library archives to interviews with historians—to piece together the world he lived in. The deeper I delved, the more I realized that his story was not just personal; it was a reflection of the broader struggles faced by journalists in the 1940s.

Researching the 1940s

Capturing the era with authenticity was a critical aspect of writing this book. From the bustling newsrooms filled with typewriters and cigarette smoke to the secretive dealings of political power players, every detail needed to reflect reality. I combed through newspaper archives, studied political speeches, and even consulted with experts in journalism history to ensure accuracy.

One of the biggest challenges was balancing fact with fiction—creating a compelling story while staying true to historical events. Key moments in the book, such as Nate’s attendance at the 1940 Democratic and Republican conventions, required careful research to align with real events and timelines.

Building Nate and Molly’s Relationship

At its core, The Shadow Journalist is not just about politics and journalism—it’s about love and sacrifice. Nate’s letters to Molly were instrumental in shaping their characters. The emotional weight behind these letters, their longing and hope, provided a heartfelt contrast to the political intrigue surrounding Nate’s career.

Bringing Molly’s character to life was especially important. She wasn’t just a supportive spouse; she was a strong woman facing her own challenges, raising a daughter while navigating the fears and uncertainties of war and political scandal.

Overcoming Challenges

Writing a book based on real-life events and family history came with its fair share of challenges. There were moments of doubt—was I telling the story in a way that honored my grandfather’s memory? Did I capture the emotional depth that the story deserved? In the end, I leaned on the letters, the research, and my family’s unwavering belief in Nate’s story.
